Game Loop by A.J. Airaksinen

Mary noticed it on her way to work: she didn’t remember the man she had been dating. No name or face came to her.

She checked her notifications. “One contact deleted,” they confirmed. Any messages, photos, even social media history would be gone. And, of course, the memories wiped off her cortical implant.

It was fair enough, really. They’d been dating no more than three weeks, Mary estimated. He owed her no explanation. Everyone had the right to be forgotten; that was the whole draw of the app.

Still, that leaden stomach feeling was there, just like every other time.
